TANet
At present, the backbone of TANet is the backbone
network of ATM. In the beginning of 2002, TANet
and fixed network companies cooperated and tried
to run the Gigabit Ethernet backbone network.
Therefore, this circuit was used for the first
time in Taiwan. The fixed network companies
and TANet took such opportunity to get familiar
with a network of this sort. After the middle
of 2002, the use of Gigabit Ethernet circuit
became steady, and at the end of 2002, it was
planned to change all backbone networks into
Gigabit Ethernet to broaden the network bandwidth.
In the meantime, it could also lower the cost.
While taking the trail of Gigabit Ethernet backbone
network, different levels of colleges and universities
started leasing the access circuit of Gigabit
Ethernet by the middle of 2002. The Gigabit
Ethernet circuit was used to greatly expand
the bandwidth and promote the information education
and network teaching. The international bandwidth
was expanded from the original two OC-3 circuits
to four OC-3 circuits in October of 2002 to
cope with the requirements of the information
collection for academic research and the development
of education. In the future, the international
bandwidth will continue its expansion according
to practical needs. As to the local backbone
bandwidth, it is expected to expand the local
backbone bandwidth up to 6Gbps before the middle
of 2003, and will continue to expand its construction
as needed in the future.
In the meantime, TANet also promotes the use
of interface with the TANet Gigabit Ethernet
Backbone in local universities and colleges,
aggressively driving the fixed network companies
to use the Fast Ethernet circuit to extend its
coverage to elementary and secondary schools
in each city and county, and negotiating with
the fixed network company to reduce the circuit
leasing cost for elementary and secondary schools.
It is believed that the low cost and sufficient
bandwidth of such metropolitan super wideband
service will make Taiwan a super wideband country.
By the super wideband project of such metropolitan
network, Taiwan will be built as a metropolitan
network and is expected to establish the operation
mode of GbE and Fe, management mode, and related
mechanisms under the cooperation of the fixed
network company and academic community. In the
meantime, the related equipment of the telecommunications
engine rooms in all places over this island
are constructed. It is believed that the business
model of the metropolitan network will expand
the fixed network operation, and drive the development
of network and computers in hardware and software
industries and network value-added service and
contents such as the blooming applications of
videoconference, network education, remote medical
treatment, e-Commerce, house security, video
on demand (VOD), interactive television, and
network games.
