SYMPOSIUM
ON DEVELOPMENT TRENDS IN THE UNDERSEA CABLE INDUSTRY IN TAIWAN

To provide interested parties with an
understanding of the current status of undersea cable business in Taiwan, the
Taiwan Network Information Center, in cooperation with communications
Magazine, recently held a "Symposium on Development Trends in the Undersea
Cable Industry in Taiwan." The symposium took place at the Taipei
International Conference Center, with 150 people in attendance. Among those
participating were representatives of the nation's leading electronics
policy-maker the Directorate-General of Telecommunications. Other organizations
invited to the symposium included international undersea cable providers Level 3 communications Inc. and Asia Global Crossing Taiwan Inc., new fixed network
operaters New Century Infocomm Tech co.,Ltd ,systems
technology providers Nortel Networks Ltd(Asia)
Ltd., and the Taiwan branch of Internet services company Pacific Century Cyberworks Taiwan Ltd. Topics
discussed in the symposium included current and future policies on undersea
cables in Taiwan as well as the current stage of development of the industry.
Additional issues under review were competitive strategies, technological
trends, relations between fixed network operators and the undersea cable
industry, and the effects of opening up undersea cable business on Type 1 and
Type 2 service providers in Taiwan.
