1.TWNIC in Brief

The filiation

TWNIC is a country NIC of Taiwan, which was founded by Computer Center, Ministry of Education in March 1994. TWNIC members are from non-profit societies, Internet Service Providers, commercial companies, governments, universities, and research organizations. There are totally 47 members till now.

The Structure

TWNIC is run under a steering committee composed by 19 commissars elected among 47 members. Under steering committee, there are 6 subcommittees—Registration, Service, Promotion, CIX, Technology and Secretariat.

IP Allocation

Rule

  1. Based upon InterNIC’s hierarchical model, TWNIC has delegated the National Internet Registry responsibility to several local ISPs.
  2. The TWNIC is responsible for requests from the local ISPs.

  1. TANet, HiNet, SEEDNet and other 8 ISPs request IP from TWNIC.
  2. All end users and other ISPs request their IP from the above ISPs.

- TANet is in charge of .edu.tw and .gov.tw.

- HiNet and SEEDNet are in charge of commercial users.

TWNIC Recent One Year and Future Prospects

The Domain Name charging model has been passed on July 30, 1997 and will be announced at the TWNIC’97 annual meeting on October 21. Since then, TWNIC will provide better services and improve the local Internet environment to all its members.

In the mean time, TWNIC is setting up the ”Taiwan Internet Exchange(TWIX)” which is expected to improve the efficiency of backbone bandwidth usage and upgrade the quality of network connection in the future.

Besides, TWNIC is establishing TW-CERT, Taiwan Computer Emergency Response Team,

aiming to handle computer emergency events and the related issues of computer security. All related information of TW-CERT will be discussed at the TWNIC’97 annual meeting.

TWNIC is an independent and non-profit organization. Keeping on doing the coordinating effort and inviting the members form different domains to join are TWNIC’s main targets.

TWNIC is to integrate the services of all ISPs in Taiwan .Surely TWNIC is urging itself to make contributions to the local Internet development and to be the Internet communication bridge between Taiwan and the world.
