IP Address Allocation Service

The Internet has become an indispensable part of modern life. From an era when the Internet was only available on computers, it has evolved to become omnipresent. Currently, almost all modern devices require an IP address to be connected to the Internet. At the end of 2018, Taiwan was ranked 15th globally in terms of the number of IPv4 addresses possessed (i.e., 35.65 million addresses). The number of IPv6 addresses obtained by Taiwan by the end of 2018 was approximately 2,476 /32 IPv6 address blocks, whereas the number of autonomous system numbers issued was approximately 354.

An IP address is similar to a property address in real life. Its purpose is to enable users to receive or transmit information on the Internet. In response to the global exhaustion of IPv4 addresses, IPv6 was introduced to replace IPv4. IPv6 is regarded as being able to better fulfill the developmental needs of future diversified mobile terminals and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, particularly for IoT applications, such as smart homes, Internet-connected vehicles/self-driving cars, smart cities, and medical healthcare applications. The length of IPv6 addresses is 128 bits (as opposed to 32 bits in IPv4 addresses), which means that IPv6 address space allows for 2128 unique IPv6 addresses. Therefore, IPv6 can resolve the problem of insufficient addresses faced by the IoT industry and can maintain the transparency of network interconnections; devices can carry out any form of bidirectional connection.

The usage rate of IPv6 in Taiwan by the end of 2018 was 29.63%, and Taiwan ranked as the sixth largest IPv6 user globally.

According to data from the APNIC's website for measuring IPv6, the adoption rate of IPv6 in Taiwan in December 2017 was only 0.38%, meaning Taiwan was ranked 67th globally in terms of IPv6 adoption. However, at the beginning of 2018, Chunghwa Telecom started providing commercial IPv6 services for 4G mobile Internet. On May 2018, HiNet also started providing IPv6 services for its FTTx network services. In addition, public WiFi has been gradually transitioning toward IPv6 adoption. These factors have caused the IPv6 adoption rate in Taiwan to surge, reaching 17.5% by September 2018, which is approximately a 45-fold increase from the initial rate of 0.38%. Recently, the global ranking of Taiwan in terms of IPv6 usage moved up to 25th, and Taiwan's growth rate in IPv6 usage was ranked first in the word. The adoption rate of IPv6 in Taiwan by the end of 2018 was 29.63%, meaning Taiwan was ranked sixth in iPv6 usage globally.
